Salud, cheers, 乾杯, proost! This year we celebrate CIOs across the globe—from Mexico and the Netherlands to Japan and the United States—for their ability to think creatively while maintaining an acute focus on both their customers’ happiness and their company’s success.
We recognize these individuals as part of the annual Oracle Excellence Awards program. They stand out from their peers in their ability to use Oracle technology to establish and refine best practices and become thought leaders in their industries.
I am pleased to honor the following winners of the 2017 Oracle Excellence Awards: CIO of the Year:
- Dave Curran, Chief Information Officer, Westpac Group: One of Westpac’s strategic priorities is the “Service Revolution,” which seeks to dramatically improve customer experience. In support of this vision, Curran and his team embarked on an enterprisewide transformation—called Customer Service Hub—to digitize customer capabilities with a modern technology architecture, while growing revenue and reducing operating costs. Westpac selected Oracle as the transformation partner to provide the technology that underpins this transformation.
- Scott Dillon, Executive Vice President, Chief Technology Officer, and Head of Technology Infrastructure Services, Wells Fargo: Wells Fargo has one of the world’s largest and most complex IT environments, and security is paramount. Dillon has helped to focus the organization on standardizing and modernizing technology across the bank, with the goal of reducing risk and costs through simplification. Oracle solutions play an important role in Wells Fargo’s strategy to organize IT into service areas versus line-of-business responsibilities to streamline the delivery of shared services across the bank. Dillon leveraged Oracle Exadata Cloud services for the consolidation and modernization of more than 5,000 of Wells Fargo’s Oracle databases—a project seen as one of the most successful IT initiatives at Wells Fargo today.
- Yasufumi Hirai, Executive Vice President, Chief Information Officer, and Chief Information Security Officer, Rakuten, Inc.: Hirai is focused on driving Rakuten’s productivity and business value, making the most of the company’s big data, and dedicating time and resources to mobile—which accounts for more than 50 percent of its transactions. Rakuten selected Oracle Exadata Database Machine and Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud to meet these needs, while also exceeding customer expectations and driving business decisions.
- Yogesh Malik, Group Chief Technology Officer, VEON Ltd.: While the whole telecommunication industry is continuing its quest for the next growth model, Malik has methodically reshaped VEON to get the company fit for the digital age. After launching high-speed 4G/LTE networks in six countries in just one year and consolidating networks after mergers in Italy and Pakistan, Malik has taken VEON on an unprecedented global business support system transformation, creating state-of-the-art, data-centric billing and customer care systems using products from across the Oracle footprint. Malik also has set an audacious ambition for VEON to become truly digital from the inside by digitizing most of its internal processes. Starting last year, VEON has embarked on a ground-breaking centralized cloud ERP implementation across all geographies.
- Greg Meyers, Corporate Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Motorola Solutions, Inc.: Motorola Solutions has divested multiple companies over the years to change the way it does business and to provide value to its customers—transforming Motorola’s business from a products company to a software company. To support this transformation, Meyers has focused on the intersection of people, process, and technology. Specifically, Meyers implemented Oracle Cloud, moving to managed data centers to free resources, and moving disaster recovery to the cloud to give the company more capital and visibility into recurring revenues.
- Fredson Oliveira, Chief Information Officer, Grupo Ultra: As the CIO of Grupo Ultra, one of the biggest holding companies in LAD region, Oliveira is focused on developing the IT department to support the businesses and ensure success. Under Oliveira’s direction, Grupo Ultra—including Ultragaz, a liquefied petroleum gas distribution company; Ipiranga, a fuel distribution company; Oxiteno, a multinational chemical company; and Ultracargo, a bulk liquids storage and logistics company—consolidated all of its companies’ disparate enterprise resource planning solutions into a single instance of Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12.2.6. Oliveira is leading the charge, fostering honest and clear communication between the organization and Oracle to ensure a successful migration.
These customers have excelled in driving business value by working in partnership with Oracle. I wish them the best in their endeavors and look forward to our continued partnership in the coming years.
The 2018 Oracle Excellence Awards: CIO of the Year will open in spring 2018. Nominations can be made here.
