Learn About Digital Innovation in an #OracleChat

By: Wendy Leung

A lot can happen in a year. In 2016, Roubini Thoughtlab, a leading global research firm revealed 24% of CEOs surveyed said digital transformation was unimportant. Now in 2017, 96% of surveyed industry CEOs worldwide view digital transformation as central to their businesses.

What a difference a year makes! Vanguard CIO John Marcante said, “Years ago, customers would compare financial firms like Fidelity, Vanguard, and Schwab. It’s not like that today—now they are comparing how easy it is to put money into an investment vehicle with how easy it is to use Uber or Lyft.”

This year’s report, titled Wealth and Asset Management 2022: The Path to Digital Leadership provides actionable insights into the digital future. The research was conducted with feedback from 1,503 investment providers from 15 countries globally. The results clearly demonstrate that the economics of having a digital strategy can no longer be debated. The most evident in the survey results: shifting investor expectations and what’s at stake in the struggle to emerge a digital leader.

As Lou Celi (@Rthoughtlab) shared: ‘With digital expectations rising rapidly, and a new generation of digital natives in sight, the stakes are high.  This is not just about ROI, it is about survival.” Firms that move too slowly stand to lose $79 million per billion dollars of revenue a year.

So, what do firms need to do to compete against growing competition from fintechs? How do you get buy into a digital strategy? What will set firms apart in this era of digital transformation? What are the key indicators of a digital leader and the cost for lagging behind?

We’ll dig deep for answers with our panel of experts in this upcoming #OracleChat on October 12, 2017 at 12 p.m. Eastern time and 9 a.m. Pacific. We’re thrilled to have a pioneer in thought leadership and digital publishing, Lou Celi, chief executive of Roubini Thoughtlab, on our panel.

We’re particularly excited to have Fintech titan Chris Skinner (@Chris_Skinner), chairman of the Financial Services Club, joining us. Skinner was named one of the Top 40 most influential people in financial technology by the Wall Street Journal’s Financial News and we can’t wait to hear his unique global perspective on digital innovation.

Join me and Mark Smedley, Oracle vice president and financial services futurist, as we moderate @OracleFS, a live, one-hour #OracleChat.

Don’t miss this one! Mark your calendars for Thursday, October 12, at noon Eastern and 9 a.m. Pacific time.

#OracleChat tips:

This Beer’s on Oracle Cloud

When it’s time to demo the latest Internet of Things and chatbot technology for a bunch of developers, you might as well have fun. Beer is also a plus. That was the thinking as members of the Oracle Developer Community built interactive cloud experiences for the Developer Lounge at the annual JavaOne conference in San Francisco, California.

The experiences demonstrated how Oracle Cloud technology can open up fields such as art and filmmaking to new possibilities and how it can be a catalyst to innovations in robotics and industrial automation.

“With beer, we’re experimenting with IoT’s role in the manufacturing and product improvement process,” said Mark Vilrokx, senior user experience architect and a member of the Emerging Technologies team in Oracle’s AppsLab group. The popular demo provided four types of beer direct from chilled kegs for developers to taste and rate. “I was setting up this morning at 9 a.m.,” he said during the conference, “and people were already lined up asking ‘is it open, is it open?’”

Alas, the demo didn’t open until 10 a.m. When it did, beer-quaffing developers helped complete the IoT manufacturing and quality improvement process that began months before.

Continuous Improvement

Vilrokx and his team had worked with a local brewery, Alpha Acid, to install sensors in the brewery to collect accurate data on facets of beer making, such as temperature, pressure, and CO2 levels in the fermentation tank. “Before, if the brewer wants to know how warm the brew is, he pours it on his hand,” Vilrokx told visiting developers. “That’s not very scientific. And he gets a measurement for now, but maybe 10 minutes later it has cooled down and he doesn’t know.” Vilrokx and his team were able to track measurements over time and provide a chart where “hopefully it’s always within the range and you can see it,” he said.

The next part of the product improvement process comes when tasters (in this case developers at JavaOne) taste and rate the beer. Because of the sensor data at the brewery, the brewer “has historic data, and he can see that this beer was rated really well and it correlates with these brewing parameters; this beer wasn’t rated well and it correlates with these other parameters,” allowing him to improve his processes over time, Vilrokx explained.

By dialing up Oracle Cloud services, the project came together in weeks, Vilrokx said. “The brewery sensors hook into Oracle Internet of Things Cloud Service, where we use its asset management and process tools,” he said. The demo in the JavaOne Developer Lounge was also outfitted with sensors linked to Oracle Internet of Things Cloud Service. “We measure the flow of the beer, and that’s being visualized on the tablet screens at each keg, measuring how many pours, how many ounces have been poured, and from that, calculating how much is left in the keg,” said Vilrokx.

Nearby in the Developer Lounge, Pepper the chatbot robot danced, told jokes, and answered questions using an intelligent bot API on Oracle Mobile Cloud Service. Attendees could even ask it how much beer was left in the kegs at beer-rating demo or which beer was highest rated, and the chatbot robot would respond with the answers.

Quick Integration

With Oracle Cloud behind the scenes, these kinds of integrations can be pulled together quickly and easily. “From a development point of view, this all runs on cloud services from Oracle,” Vilrokx said. “The application used to rate the beer runs on Oracle Application Container Cloud service. We used continuous integration in Oracle Developer Cloud Service to push out code to the container service. We used Oracle MySQL Cloud Service to store all the IoT sensor and rating information,” where, one suspects, Pepper the chatbot robot found its answers to those beer-related questions.

“We built this all very quickly. We didn’t have to worry about servers—we didn’t have to worry about anything like that. It’s all running in the cloud, and it’s all easy to deploy,” Vilrokx said. “It’s local coding and worldwide deployment in five minutes.”

Explore other demos, including CNC LightSculpture, 3D Builder Playground, and the BulletTime Video Ring, by following #odevcommunity.

Safari’s New “Intelligent Tracking Prevention” — What Does it Mean for Marketers?

Along with the release of the iPhone 8, Apple’s new operating system, iOS 11 and its browser, Safari 11 on desktop, are causing quite a stir among advertisers and marketers. Not for their new design or ease of use but for their release of “Intelligent Tracking Prevention” — a feature which would limit website owners’ ability to track users across domains. But what does that mean exactly, and how can marketers best prepare for it? Let’s take a closer look:

What Does Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP) Actually Do?

In a nutshell, ITP limits the ability for advertisers and site owners to track users across domains. Any websites that load things like scripts or image across domains are classified according to a machine-learning algorithm, and cookies that those sites deposit are essentially sectioned off — preventing them from tracking the user 24 hours after they first interacted with the site. Why 24 hours? The cookie is stored in the system in case the user wants to user their login information from one domain on a separate service — for example, logging into a service using your Facebook or Google credentials.

intelligent tracking prevention cookie timelineImage Source

Once the cookie is partitioned away, it sits there until 30 days have passed. If the user hasn’t interacted with that site any more after 30 days, the cookie is purged.

What Does This Mean for Advertisers?

Currently, ITP is only enabled for mobile and desktop versions of Safari. According to Statcounter as of August 2017, Safari holds a little over 20% of the desktop browser market – but as much as 58% of the iPad tablet market (Android mobile devices do not support Safari). This may not sound like much compared to Firefox or Chrome, but it actually represents millions of users. And, as privacy concerns grow, advertisers and marketers alike can expect this type of technology to spread across all popular browsers and devices.

The question then becomes, what does this actually mean for advertising – particularly platforms like Google Adwords?

Google has responded to the Intelligence Tracking Prevention initiative by changing how it captures and reports conversions within Adwords. According to Apple’s own recommendations, which recommend “server-side storage for attribution of ad impressions on your website” and that “[l]ink decoration (padding links with information) [be] used to pass on attribution information in navigations”.

According to Chi Hea Cho, a spokesperson for Google, “[w]e are updating our measurement tools, consistent with Apple’s recommendations for ad attribution, to help our customers continue to accurately measure ad clicks and conversions. These changes are designed to work for all browsers, but are timed to adapt to the new settings Apple is introducing. Our goal is to limit interruptions to our users’ experiences and to preserve our partners’ ability to evaluate their investments in digital advertising. As always, giving users choice and control of their data and how it’s used is a top priority for us.”

To that end, Google has also sent out an email to Adwords users with the following technical details:

To help ensure conversions are reported accurately in your AdWords account, we’ll be making three changes, consistent with Apple’s recommendations for ad attribution:

  1. If you have auto-tagging enabled and a Google Analytics tag on your website, we’ll begin to set a new Google Analytics cookie on that site’s domain, which will store information about the ad click that brought a user to your site. If you have linked your AdWords and Google Analytics accounts, the AdWords conversion tracking tag will be able to use that click information.
  2. AdWords will continue to report conversions for users who have recently interacted with Google services and domains.
  3. AdWords will also use statistical modeling to estimate website conversions that could not be measured from Safari, and include them in your AdWords reporting.

To help with these changes, Google Analytics has created a new type of cookie, called _gac which extends Google Analytics tracking to include Adwords conversions. Whenever auto-tagging is enabled, the cookie is used to store ad click details. Right now, the cookie is sent from Googleadservices.com — which makes it a third-party cookie and one of the types that Apple’s machine learning process would in turn segment and separate.

With _gac, the cookie is instead set on the advertiser’s domain and thereby becomes a first-party cookie — one that conforms to ITP’s rules and recommendations. That means all the ad data associated with that particular user will continue to be sent across for conversion reporting and attribution.

So if you’ve linked your Adwords and Google Analytics campaigns, as most people have, you won’t see any changes and will continue to record conversion data from Safari users. Those that haven’t will notice that Google records the conversion activity only within that first 24-hour period.

How Can Marketers Be Prepared?

The biggest shift that affects reporting and tracking is going to be the migration from third-party to first-party cookies. Still, even first-party cookies aren’t a foolproof solution since no one is truly certain how Safari’s machine learning processes will identify them, and whether or not human ingenuity will work to circumvent these changes and continue to track users as it has in the past.

If you’re working with a vendor that uses its own form of reporting and measurement, ask them what steps they have put into place to mitigate the issues arising from potentially lower data quality from Safari users. It’s important to note that there will likely be shifts and changes in the performance data that’s gathered in the coming weeks and months — so avoid any rash decisions for the time being until things settle.

Of course, the ever-looming elephant in the room is the issue of how effective campaigns will be now that this type of remarketing has effectively been cut off or severely restricted. What happens when users view products across multiple devices but wait longer than 30 days to purchase? The data you gather in these cases is simply not going to be an accurate reflection of what’s really happening.

AdWeek has joined the fray, expressing their concern to Apple and others about how this change has affected business models and the nature of the internet as a whole. They write:

The infrastructure of the modern Internet depends on consistent and generally applicable standards for cookies, so digital companies can innovate to build content, services, and advertising that are personalized for users and remember their visits. Apple’s Safari move breaks those standards and replaces them with an amorphous set of shifting rules that will hurt the user experience and sabotage the economic model for the Internet.

We strongly encourage Apple to rethink its plan to impose its own cookie standards and risk disrupting the valuable digital advertising ecosystem that funds much of today’s digital content and services.

Even Forbes has demonstrated that small to mid-sized companies, especially those in the retargeting and demand-gen fields are going to see significant negative impact, whereas sites that users visit daily, like Amazon and Facebook, stand to gain tremendously as prices for ad inventory on Safari browsers is lowered.

The best thing you can do right now is to let the digital dust settle, and then carve out a plan that goes beyond just collecting and acting on the data you receive. Facebook and Amazon represent great two-way social channels that are extremely lucrative for brands looking to foster consumer relationships and brand awareness. Marketers may find that their campaign actions shift based on what data they can collect and extrapolate from Safari users, rather than focusing on what they can’t have.

But let’s turn the question over to our users. Are your ads and data tracking practices affected by these changes, and what changes are being made in your organization? Do you think Apple is making a smart decision, or are they damaging the economic foundation of the internet itself? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below!

Machine Learning Explained

By Mike Faden

If you’ve ever received a customized offer while web surfing, or had a credit card unexpectedly declined because you were traveling, you may have been on the receiving end of machine learning. Today, machine learning is already used in a wide range of applications—customer segmentation and fraud detection are two of them—and it’s in the process of being integrated into many more.

Machine learning is based on algorithms that can learn from data without rules-based programming. One reason it’s become so valuable is because companies are dealing with vast and rapidly growing volumes of data. Some estimates suggest that the amount of data globally doubles every two years.

“Trying to find the value in that data, getting insights into the data, can be very challenging,” says Aali Masood, senior director of big data marketing at Oracle. “This is the appeal of machine learning—you can let the algorithms figure it out.” Machine learning may find things that humans would miss; furthermore, the more data that is fed to the algorithms, the better they get at identifying trends and patterns.

Common Machine Learning Techniques

Machine learning isn’t a single approach—it’s a collection of different techniques used for solving different problems, says Peter Jeffcock, director of big data product marketing at Oracle. Multiple techniques may be combined in some cases. Some of the best-known are:

  • Regression is used to predict numbers, such as optimum pricing, Jeffcock says. For example, it might be used to predict home prices based on the number of rooms and the size of the yard. Other uses include estimating customer lifetime value. Interestingly, Jeffcock notes, even though machine learning is one of today’s hottest buzzwords, not all the techniques are new. Regression concepts can be traced back to British statistician Sir Francis Galton, Charles Darwin’s half-cousin, as early as 1875.
  • Classification is a “supervised” learning technique in which the system learns to identify members of a known class based on their characteristics. Jeffcock’s analogy: If you tell a system that a specific fruit is a banana, it can start to get an idea of the characteristics that make something a banana. Then it will be able to recognize other bananas. Uses include identifying likely high-value customers—or customers likely to “churn”—and fraud detection.
  • Clustering, in contrast, is an “unsupervised” learning technique in which the system recognizes similarities between items and groups them as members of an inferred class—even though it doesn’t know what the class is. To return to the banana analogy: A system might recognize that thin, curved, and yellow items are all members of the same class—even though it hasn’t been told that the class is called bananas. Similarly, it might cluster together round, hard, green things even though it doesn’t know they are apples. Common uses include customer segmentation and credit risk analysis, Jeffcock says.
  • Anomaly detection is used to look for differences rather than similarities. As its name suggests, it can be used to find things that are unusual: “A needle in the haystack or a black sheep,” Jeffcock says. It may find anomalies that might otherwise be hard to spot in masses of data. Jeffcock notes an example of the healthcare company that found one dentist billing for 85 fillings per hour—which works out to less than a minute per filling—suggesting investigation for potential fraud.
  • Association rules are used to identify like-minded people for purposes such as market basket analysis. Companies use it to make offers: it’s often the technique behind the “you might be also interested in…” suggestions on ecommerce websites, Jeffcock says. It is used to determine rules, such as people who buy spaghetti, meatballs, and tomato sauce also tend to buy Parmesan cheese—so if you put the first three items in your online shopping cart you may also be offered the fourth. The technique can also used for root cause analysis and to find “harbingers of failure:” consumers whose tastes are so far out of the mainstream that if they like a product, it can actually indicate that the product is likely to fail.
  • Time series analysis can be used to analyze data over time. Uses include forecasting household energy consumption based on past usage, or predicting seasonally adjusted employment data.
  • Neural networks are based on the concept of neurons that are somewhat like the neurons in the human brain, and are applied to problems in which they learn somewhat like humans. For example, a neural network might be trained to recognize handwritten digits by being shown examples. Neural networks can become large and multilayered to tackle complex problems.

Companies are applying machine learning in many ways to achieve business benefits, Jeffcock explains. Britain’s National Health Service, for example, has used Oracle’s machine learning to identify hundreds of millions of pounds in savings. Sports-ticketing company StubHub uses machine learning to detect potentially fraudulent transactions.

Organized fraudsters continually look for new ways to evade detection—so it’s important that fraud-detection models can quickly adapt. “What works today may not work tomorrow,” Jeffcock says.

Lift and Shift Existing Workloads for the Same Cloud

By Alan Zeichick

IT managers shouldn’t have to choose between cloud-driven innovation and data-center-style computing. Developers shouldn’t have to choose between the latest DevOps programming using containers and microservices, and traditional architectures and methodologies. CIOs shouldn’t have to choose between a fully automated and fully managed cloud and a self-managed model using their own on-staff administrators.

At an Oracle OpenWorld general session on infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) October 3, Don Johnson, senior vice president of product development at Oracle, lamented that CIOs are often forced to make such difficult choices. Sure, the cloud is excellent for purpose-built applications, he said, “and so what’s working for them is cloud-native, but what’s not working in the cloud are enterprise workloads. It’s an unnecessary set of bad choices.”

When it comes to moving existing business-critical applications to the cloud, Johnson explained the three difficult choices faced by many organizations. First, CIOs can rewrite those applications from the ground up to run in the cloud in a platform-as-a-service (PaaS) model. That’s best in terms of achieving the greatest computational efficiency, as well as integration with other cloud services, but it can be time-consuming and costly. Second, organizations can retrofit their existing applications to run in in the cloud, but this can be challenging at best, or nearly impossible in some cases. Or third, CIOs can “lift and shift” existing on-premises applications, including their full software stack, directly into the cloud, using the IaaS model.

Historically, those three models have required three different clouds. No longer. Only the Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, Johnson stated, “lets you run your full existing stack alongside cloud-native applications.” And this is important, he added, because migration to the cloud must be slow and deliberate. “Running in the cloud is very disruptive. It can’t happen overnight. You need to move when and how you want to move,” he said. And a deliberative movement to the cloud means a combination of new cloud-native PaaS applications and legacy applications migrated to IaaS.

Avoid Difficult Choices

In a traditional data center, developers and operations staff must make decisions. Which physical servers should be used for which applications? Who should manage those servers? How often should those servers, and the rest of the infrastructure, be refreshed for improved performance and lower operational costs? Refreshing the hardware means increased capital expenditures, significant human effort, and potential disruption as data and workloads are migrated to the new platforms.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure eliminates the need to make those choices, Johnson argued, offering greater performance at low costs, backed up by robust service-level agreements. What’s more, the cloud platform is open, without proprietary lock-in or software requirements. “Bring your favorite tools, orchestrations, platforms, and applications,” he said. “You can run your entire business in our cloud, and if you choose to, you can shut off your data centers.”

What does that mean? Everything from bare-metal x86 servers to storage to newly announced DNS services for IaaS applications that are lifted and shifted into the cloud, running alongside software-as-a-service applications such as Oracle’s PeopleSoft Human Capital Management and cloud-native PaaS applications. All in the same cloud, all with unified identity, inter- and intra-service messaging using standards such as Apache Kafka, and unified security models.

New Infrastructure Offerings, Better Performance

On the hardware side, Oracle announced new Oracle Cloud Infrastructure offerings at OpenWorld 2017, such as what Johnson called “X7” architecture based on Intel’s Skylake processors. A typical X7 cloud server provides up to 52 cores in physical or virtual configurations, with up to 768 GB of memory, 51 TB of solid-state storage, and 50 GB/sec network connectivity. That’s high performance, offering 3.9 million input/output operations per second (IOPS) per server, an order of magnitude higher than what’s available from other public cloud providers.

As if that’s not enough, Johnson explained that Oracle also is partnering with NVIDIA to offer graphics processor units (GPUs) in its IaaS servers, to assist with math-intensive computation for applications including simulation, analytics, high-performance computing, and artificial intelligence. In those sorts of applications, GPUs can operate with 10x to 100x the performance—and a significant reduction in cost—compared with standard CPUs.

Traditionally, those types of flexible computing resources were found in data centers, not in the cloud. The world has changed, and that’s why Johnson insisted that with Oracle Infrastructure Cloud, using the IaaS model, developers and CIOs don’t need to make difficult choices when it comes to developing new cloud-native applications or lifting and shifting existing enterprise workloads. Want GPUs? No problem. Want Docker containers and Kubernetes? No problem. Want Oracle to manage some things, while you manage other things? No problem.

CIOs should not have to choose between cloud-native apps and existing applications. Now, they no longer have to decide: They can run both types of workloads side by side in a first-class IaaS cloud.

These Tech-Savvy Students Are Teaching Silicon Valley a Few Things

What happens when you bring together supersmart high school students and Silicon Valley technology professionals? Innovative projects involving 3D printing, the Internet of Things (IoT), wearable technology, and much more.

Such innovations were front and center at Oracle OpenWorld’s Innovation Studio, where students from Design Tech High School in Millbrae, Calif., demonstrated their projects alongside startups and global companies including GE Digital and Toyota.

“We’ve designed a smart hospital room, with sensors that measure heart rate, temperature, light, even humidity,” says Avery, a d.tech sophomore, of his Hospital Ambiance project. “The room can use these measurements to react to the state of the patient and aid them in an otherwise cold and emotionless place,” he said.

To research the project, the students worked with a nurse at their school and visited local hospitals. “I went to Stanford hospitals to get feedback from administrators, doctors, and nurses,” says James, a junior who participated in the project.

“One of the coolest things about d.tech is that they invite the local community to their school,” says Colleen Cassity, executive director of the Oracle Education Foundation, which supports the school and helps to arrange the volunteer program. “Kids learn hands-on technology from Oracle employees, photography from a local professional, and financial literacy from nearby Visa employees,” she said.

In January 2018, the foundation will open a new campus for the high school on the grounds of Oracle headquarters in Redwood Shores.

Time to Explore and Invent

The d.tech projects on display at OpenWorld were conceived, designed, and prototyped during an innovative program known as an “Intersession.” Intersession is a two-week course where “the school pushes pause on the regular school day,” says Cassity, and students work in small groups to explore arts and professions and develop solutions to real-world problems.

In tech pursuits, students are pared with mentors who help them conceptualize, engineer, and test prototypes of games, wearables, and other IoT solutions. Intersession, which happens four times a year, “immerses the students in design thinking,” says Cassity.

During this break from the normal high school schedule, “failure” is reframed as a golden opportunity to learn and improve. “Failure is important because it’s the best way to learn and go forward,” says Avery. With design thinking, students learn to “design not for yourself but for the individual whose needs you want to meet.”

Top projects from Intersessions get displayed at Oracle OpenWorld. In addition to the hospital ambiance program described above, this year’s projects include:

  • A student wellness scanner that helps teachers prepare for class by collecting students’ attendance and assessing their mood.
  • Project Roam, an IoT project that helps connect staff and students throughout the school day.
  • A water monitoring system that uses sensors to provide a clear picture of water quality in local wetlands.
  • A pickpocket-proof purse, which is a patent-pending wearable solution. A 3D design project for wrist and hand braces where students work with 3D design company Carbon.
  • Competition robots engineered and presented by d.tech’s robotics team.

“I’m really glad I got this opportunity,” says Ally, a d.tech junior, of her time at Oracle OpenWorld. “I like teaching adults. They seem really interested in what we’re doing, and I like showing them things that I think are cool.”

Students are not just learning to interact with adults, they are also seeing that they can build things that matter. Hanui, a d.tech junior, pointed to the work students are doing with Carbon. “They’re designing hand braces and I was thinking that’s really cool because we have high schoolers working on projects that will improve people’s lives. I’m excited to see their projects get better and better.”

“These d.tech students are gaining the confidence that the world can be a better place and they can be the ones who make it so,” says Oracle’s Cassity. With design thinking, she says, “they have practiced a problem-solving approach over and over again and are confident that they can always design a solution.”

Oracle Blockchain ‘Extends Boundaries of the Enterprise’

Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service can help companies reduce friction in business-to-business transactions by eliminating the need for third-party intermediaries, says Mark Rakhmilevich, Oracle senior director of product management and strategy.

Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service provides preassembled blockchain code that’s optimized for many standard business processes, including ERP transactions that traditionally require third-party validation. Blockchain addresses the problem of trust between organizations by providing independent validation through a tamper-resistant, peer-distributed ledger, thus eliminating the need for offline reconciliation. “Blockchain can remove the need for intermediaries and replace it with cryptographically secure protocols,” Rakhmilevich said during a presentation this week at Oracle OpenWorld 2017. “It will help companies extend the boundaries of their enterprises.”

He noted that the service is provided as a managed platform as a service so companies “don’t have to stand up new instances for every use case.” In this preassembled service, “all needed components have been provisioned.”

Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service enables customers to:

  • Deliver business results with the ability to rapidly onboard and easily scale the network participants globally, while helping ensure that operations run continually with resilience, high availability, and autonomous recoverability.
  • Accelerate innovation with Oracle Cloud applications by extending enterprise boundaries to reduce friction in existing business processes and enable new business models and opportunity to access untapped revenue streams.  The Applications Integration toolkit provides integrated applications, sample code, templates, and design patterns to accelerate the integration of blockchain applications to Oracle SaaS and on-premises applications suites.
  • Speed up business processes through trusted real-time information sharing across existing Oracle ERP Cloud, Oracle SCM Cloud, Netsuite SuiteCloud Platform, or custom blockchain application integrations.
  • Reduce risk, complexity, and increase efficiency by securely automating cross-organization transactions, and providing reliable sharing of information both inside and outside the enterprise boundary. Combined, these can help reduce transaction costs, mitigate security and privacy risks for enterprises, and simplify compliance and audits. With a preassembled, managed cloud platform, customers can also simplify operational complexity, dynamically change network configurations and rapidly identify and resolve issues with real-time monitoring dashboards. Furthermore, as blockchain technology rapidly evolves, Oracle stays on top of the latest capabilities and helps ensure customers are not exposed to undue risk of technological churn.
  • Accelerate time to market with REST API-driven platform and rich integration options in Oracle Cloud Platform. Start developing blockchain applications within minutes without complex setup and provisioning, and leverage API-driven development for cloud or on-premises applications using REST API and API management service to easily invoke blockchain services directly or with prebuilt integrations from Oracle Cloud.

Additionally, Oracle Blockchain Cloud Service will be offered as part of Oracle Platform for Open Banking and will provide seamless connectivity between Oracle FLEXCUBE and other banks to enable greater security, scalability, and transparency in the information exchanged. https://blogs.oracle.com/oracle-blockchain-cloud-service-%E2%80%98extends-boundaries-of-the-enterprise%E2%80%99

Oracle and NVIDIA Provide Accelerated Compute Offerings

By: Vinay Shivagange Chandrashekar

Our cloud infrastructure’s mission has always been to provide uncompromising performance with best-in-class hardware so that customers such as data scientists, engineers, and researchers can solve the biggest challenges and run the most compute-intensive workloads, whether they’re solving cancer or making self-driving cars.

To help accelerate these challenging workloads, we’re excited to announce that you’ll be able to utilize NVIDIA’s Pascal-based Tesla GPUs on our newly announced X7 hardware. With no hypervisor overhead, you’ll have access to bare metal compute instances on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure with two NVIDIA Tesla P100 GPUs to run CUDA-based workloads allowing for more than 21 TFLOPS of single-precision performance per instance. These instances will initially be available in our US-East Ashburn region, and our EU-Germany Frankfurt region shortly after.

Oracle is also working closely with NVIDIA to provide the next generation of GPUs based on the Volta Architecture in both bare metal and virtual machine compute instances soon, allowing for up to 8 NVIDIA GPUs, all interconnected with NVIDIA NVLink. These instances enable larger workloads to fit a single compute instance, while optimizing communication between GPUs with NVIDIA NVLink. This is going to be a game changer for customers, allowing them to essentially rent a supercomputer by the hour!

“Enterprises need accelerated computing to run compute-intensive AI, HPC, and advanced analytics workloads,” said Ian Buck, general manager and vice president of Accelerated Computing at NVIDIA. “NVIDIA and Oracle’s collaboration will provide Fortune 500 companies that use Oracle Cloud on-demand access to the world’s most advanced GPU computing technology available.”

With AI and Deep Learning quickly becoming one of the most important and fastest-growing workloads, we’re making this transition to the cloud simpler by providing pre-configured images. When you launch these NVIDIA GPU instances your images will have CUDA SDK preconfigured so you can get your workloads running quickly and seamlessly. NVIDIA cuDNN libraries are also preloaded so it’s easier to set up and run neural net workloads.

Apart from running cutting-edge AI workloads, the instances are capable of delivering more than 10 TFLOPs of double-precision performance, which helps traditional HPC workloads such as Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD), Monte Carlo Simulations, and reservoir modeling.

Zenotech is an Oracle partner that provides cloud-based HPC solutions for Computational Fluid Dynamics, helping engineers at aerospace companies, automotive companies, and civil engineering firms simulate airflow over airplane wings, airflow around buildings, and solve similar types of complex engineering challenges.

“Cutting-edge hardware can make all the difference for mission-critical HPC workloads today for our customers. With the availability of NVIDIA’s Pascal GPUs on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, along with a commitment for next-generation NVIDIA Volta GPUs, Oracle is a no-brainer for compute-intensive and performance-optimized workloads such as ours in aerospace and manufacturing,” said Jamil Appa, cofounder and director of Zenotech.

We cannot wait to see what customers achieve with these new NVIDIA GPU instances on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure.

Catch the Drift with Machine Learning

By Alan Zeichick

“One of these things is not like the others,” the television show Sesame Street taught generations of children. Easy. Let’s move to the next level: “One or more of these things may or may not be like the others, and those variances may or may not represent systems vulnerabilities, failed patches, configuration errors, compliance nightmares, or imminent hardware crashes.” That’s a lot harder than distinguishing cookies from brownies.

Looking through gigabytes of log files and transactions records to spot patterns or anomalies is hard for humans: it’s slow, tedious, error-prone, and doesn’t scale. Fortunately, it’s easy for artificial intelligence (AI) software, such as the machine learning algorithms build into Oracle Management Cloud. What’s more, the machine learning algorithms can be used to direct manual or automated remediation efforts to improve security, compliance, and performance.

Consider how large-scale systems gradually drift away from their required (or desired) configuration, a key area of concern in the large enterprise. In his Monday, October 2 Oracle OpenWorld session on managing and securing systems at scale using AI, Prakash Ramamurthy, senior vice president of systems management at Oracle, talked about how drift happens. Imagine that you’ve applied a patch, but then later you spool up a virtual server that is running an old version of a critical service or contains an obsolete library with a known vulnerability. That server is out of compliance, Ramamurthy said. Drift.

Drift is bad, said Ramamurthy, and detecting and stopping drift is a core competency of Oracle Management Cloud. It starts with monitoring cloud and on-premises servers, services, applications, and logs, using machine learning to automatically understand normal behavior and identify anomalies. No training necessary here: A variety of machine learning algorithms teach themselves how to play the “one of these things is not like the others” game with your data, your systems, and your configuration, and also to classify the systems in ways that are operationally relevant. Even if those logs contain gigabytes of information on hundreds of thousands of transactions each second.

The Problem Is Never a Dearth of Data

We are drowning in operational data—too much of it. Most of that data represents perfectly normal operations, but is necessary for determining historical context and operational norms, as well as serving as a baseline for analytics. What is needed, Ramamurthy said, is insight: Is there a problem? If so, what is wrong? Where is it? What should be done? Can that be handled automatically?

Often, insights come from detecting and analyzing outliers, he explained. Perhaps one server has a Node.js library that’s a different version from the one installed on other servers. This may represent a deviation from patch/update polices, or might represent surreptitiously installed malware. Or perhaps a transaction that occasionally takes four minutes to write to a database, when that task usually takes less than two seconds, represents a resource allocation problem with a particular database server, or a transient issue with a network connection.

Can these problems be solved without machine learning? Of course, said Ramamurthy. A log analysis system could be configured to look for database “write” operations that take more than 10 seconds, or to scan for unapproved versions of the Node.js library. However, there are thousands (or millions) or such possible anomalous cases, and it’s impractical to manually code them all, as well as keep up with changes. With machine learning, it’s not necessary to write manual filters or do any sort of manual log or transaction review, he explained. The machine learning algorithms train themselves to find problems—and continually retrain to always stay current on the active system configuration.

Algorithms Designed For On-The-Job Training

That’s the key benefit of machine learning, compared to other popular AI techniques. Expert systems, for example, are provided with an explicit set of rules, often written by human experts, and then automatically solve problems by applying those rules. Neural networks are trained to recognize and classify specific patterns in sample datasets, and then use that training to identify similar patterns in real-world data.

While both expert systems and neural networks are incredibly powerful and efficient in production environments, they must be explicitly trained on domain-specific test datasets—and those algorithms are not flexible or able to go beyond that training. By contrast, machine learning does not need to be trained, and can autonomously find patterns in real-world data—even as that data is shifting or changing over time. That makes machine learning the perfect tool for autonomous computing, and for allowing tools like Oracle Management Cloud to start work right away, potentially producing useful insights on Day 1. What’s more, machine learning algorithms can even make predictions based on how data changes over time, allowing administrators to gain insight for capacity planning or preventive maintenance.

In other words, as system norms shift, the algorithms in Oracle Management Cloud keep up with the changes, and will still call out instances of drift. “By building machine learning into everything,” said Ramamurthy, “Oracle Management Cloud has fundamentally changed how users do management, operations, and security. Instead of studying thousands of bits of data to troubleshoot, machine learning is analyzing the data to bring insights to our customers.” Because one of those things is not like the others—and we need to fix that.

Oracle Supercharges Its Cloud Applications with Embedded Artificial Intelligence

By Monica Mehta

Artificial intelligence (AI) is drastically altering the way companies do business. Now, new embedded AI capabilities in Oracle Cloud Applications can help businesses leverage this major technology in a simpler, more efficient way.

This week at Oracle OpenWorld, Oracle announced new AI-based apps for finance, human resources, supply chain, manufacturing, commerce, customer service, marketing, and sales. The apps expand AI and machine learning capabilities across Oracle’s cloud portfolio.

Unlike standalone apps that need integration and create extra steps in the decision-making process, the new Oracle Adaptive Intelligent Apps embed AI capabilities directly into Oracle Enterprise Resource Planning Cloud, Oracle Human Capital Management Cloud, Oracle Supply Chain Management Cloud, and Oracle Customer Experience Cloud Suite.

The apps can react, learn, and adapt in real time based on historical and dynamic customer data, which helps organizations transform business processes and user experiences.

The goal is to enable business users to take advantage of AI directly within their existing tools instead of having to export their data into an external AI solution.

“The new AI capabilities combine first- and third-party data with advanced machine learning and sophisticated decision science to deliver the industry’s most powerful AI-based modern business applications,” said Steve Miranda, Oracle’s executive vice president of applications development.

Third-party data feeds into Oracle Adaptive Intelligent Apps from Oracle Data Cloud, the largest third-party data marketplace in the world, with more than 5 billion global consumer and business IDs, and more than 7.5 trillion data points collected monthly.

New Capabilities for Every Business User

By baking AI directly into the cloud applications, the new tools provide fast insights to business professionals, enabling them to make decisions more easily.

How can the new AI-powered capabilities benefit users in specific functional areas?  Here are just a few examples:

Finance and Procurement: By analyzing historical trends and business risk data, finance professionals can develop suggested discount rates on invoices, optimize cash flow, and create the optimal balance between buyers and suppliers.

Human Resources: With the application of natural language search and deep learning technologies to resumes and job postings, HR professionals can source the best candidates and determine the likelihood of success and longevity by using insights from previous recruitment engagements and current job indicators.

Supply Chain: Predictive analytics and machine learning techniques can detect and analyze key signals in device data, helping with activities such as predicting and preventing machine failure before it happens, auto-discovering the best ways to segment planning data, and auto-tuning supply chain planning engines.

Manufacturing: By enhancing the management of manufacturing operations, the new apps can drive factory and shop floor improvements by performing incident detection, root-cause analysis, and smart resolution within minutes in a connected factory.

Commerce: Natural language and deep learning capabilities provide features such as dynamic tags and category pages that personalize search suggestions and blend search results with real-time offers to enable friction-free search.

Customer Service: Deep learning technologies can reduce the time between request and resolution across thousands of potential questions and associated answers. Representatives who handle service requests can receive automated responses based on previous learnings.

Marketing: Marketers can use the new AI capabilities to better understand their target audiences and provide the best offers by utilizing consumer and business data. The AI tools gauge response rates and enable marketers to identify how audiences are interacting with content, and tailor future communications.

Sales: Utilizing business and third-party data such as live news and event feeds, the AI tools provide next-step recommendations to close deals and optimize sales offers, and prompt sales reps with smart call points.

“AI has the power to be more transformative for the enterprise than any other technology in recent history,” said Amit Zavery, senior vice president of product development for Oracle Cloud Platform.

How More Agility Leads to Greater Revenue Growth

Here at The Modern Finance Leader, one of our key themes is the need for “finance agility.” The reason is simple: research has shown that finance agility and positive revenue growth are intricately linked.

Earlier this year, the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA) and Oracle surveyed 500 finance professionals across North America. The resulting research, Agile Finance Revealed: The New Operating Model for Modern Finance, uncovered three main characteristics that identify an agile finance organization:

  1. Better information to predict the future
  2. Greater efficiency through automation
  3. More influence to drive business outcomes

In one of the most important outcomes of the research, we found that businesses with agile finance teams were significantly more likely to achieve positive revenue growth: 89% of organizations with agile finance teams reported positive growth, vs. 63% of those with non-agile finance teams.

In an upcoming series of webcasts, we’ll take a closer look at profitability, agility, and how finance leaders across particular industries can take steps to achieve both.

How CFOs Lead Their Companies to Achieve Optimal Profitability

Few CFOs would disagree that their companies aspire to increase profitability while minimizing costs. But many companies struggle to identify the best ways to sustain profitability; examples might include offering different discounts to different segments of customers, or employing activity-based costing to justify the use of resources for specific products or services.
